Introduction

Does a day at the beach sound like the perfect getaway to you? For many Californians, and especially San Diegans, the beach is simply a way of life. However, we aren't the only people who feel this way. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit our beaches each summer and our economy depends on those tourist dollars. Providing a safe, family environment for them as well as ourselves is a top priority to the San Diego Tourism Bureau and the San Diego Lifeguard Association. Your job is to create and design, with a partner, a "Beach and Ocean Safety Guide". This guide will be distributed by the San Diego Tourism Bureau, San Diego Lifeguard Headquarters and local beach area hotels, restaurants and shops.

The Process

Use this a step-by-step process to help you complete this project:

  1. Choose a partner to work on this activity with you.
  2. Decide who will be the Beach Specialist and Ocean Specialist.
  3. Print out the questions in your specialty area. Find the Print icon on Netscape Press it to print your document.
  4. Read the articles under your specialty.
  5. Answer the questions on your printout.
  6. Share the information you gathered with your partner at your desks.
  7. Together decide what information you feel is important to put into your beach and safety brochure.
  8. With your partner, design your San Diego Ocean and Beach Safety Guide.
  9. See samples below.
  10. Use the evaluation rubric to help you determine what needs to be added to your brochure.


Evaluation

 

You will be evaluated based on the brochure you design. The information on the brochure should be thorough and the product should contain exact and accurate information about beach and ocean safety tips. It should be attractive, colorful, neat and easy to use. It also should be carefully designed, include drawings, written text and address important questions about beach and ocean safety.
